There is an inherent rebellious nature in the heart of a person who cares nothing about what others think. Our reputation is the calling card of our character. It speaks for the individual in place of speaking for himself. This is not to say that we are driven by what others think. All we do in life should be for an audience of one, that is Christ (Colossians 3:23-24).

It is the fear (reverence) of God (Proverbs 9:10) that motivates us, not the fear of man. This being said and understood, there is still great value to be found in the favor of our peers.

The Bible tells us in Acts 4:13 that the Sanhedrin (religious leaders) “took note that Peter and John had been with Jesus”. Their association was backed up by their behavior and a reputation was both created and acknowledged. In this case, it brought persecution instead of promotion.

Reference and reputation should create a sense of responsibility. It places you in a proven position of following Christ and increases your influence. This means greater opportunity to serve and be an example to others. Every believer should strive to live in peace and in turn, win the respect of Christians and non-Christians alike (Romans 12:18; 1 Thess. 4:12).

After all, the entire system of the kingdom of god is based on relationship. Only by honoring one another and submitting to the authority of the kingdom will we have the full anointing He intends us to have.

References and Godly reputation are a natural by product in the life of a Christian that diligently works within kingdom structure (Luke 7:2).
